Introducing Gerbs Sweetened Dried Blueberries
Dried blueberries are fresh blueberries with most of their water removed, concentrating their flavor and sweetness, made by dehydrating them (often after a sugar-syrup infusion and oiling for chewiness) in commercial dryers, ovens, or dehydrators, resulting in chewy, flavorful snacks used in cereals, baking, or as a healthy treat.
How are Dried Blueberries Made
Washing & Preparation: Fresh blueberries are washed, stems removed, and often blanched (briefly dipped in hot water, then ice water) to help the skin crack, allowing water to escape faster.
- Infusion (Optional but Common): Berries are often infused in sugar solution or sometimes apple juice concentrate (Uncommon) to retain moisture, enhance sweetness, and keep them plump.
- Drying:
-
-
- Commercial: Heated air tunnels or sun-drying methods are used.
-
-
-
- Home: A food dehydrator or a conventional oven at its lowest setting can be used. A slow process not possible for commercial production.
-
- Oiling: A light misting of sunflower oil is often applied to prevent sticking and maintain texture. Without this necessary step the product simply could not be stored, packaged and transported commercially.
What They Are
- Concentrated Flavor: Water removal intensifies the berry’s natural sugars, calories, and antioxidants.
- Texture: They are chewy and leathery, unlike the crispness of truly dried-out fruit, thanks to the syrup and oil.
- Varieties: Available sweetened, unsweetened (rare), or sweetened with fruit juice concentrates
Dried blueberries are packed with antioxidants (like anthocyanins), fiber, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K, boosting heart and brain health, improving digestion, supporting immunity, and aiding bone health, though they have concentrated sugar and calories, so portion control is key. They’re a convenient, nutrient-dense snack, great for energy, but check labels for added sulfites.

Key Benefits
- Antioxidant Powerhouse: Rich in anthocyanins, they fight cell damage from free radicals, reducing inflammation and chronic disease risk.
- Heart Health: Help lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol, and reduce heart disease risk.
- Brain Function: Antioxidants support cognitive function, memory, and may reduce dementia risk.
- Digestive Aid: High fiber content promotes regularity and gut health.
- Immunity & Bone Health: Provide Vitamin C for immunity and Vitamin K for strong bones and blood clotting.
- Energy Boost: A quick source of energy, ideal for athletes.
- Eye Health: Contain antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, protecting eyes.
Dried blueberries add sweet, concentrated flavor to both sweet and savory dishes; use them in oatmeal, yogurt, granola, muffins, cookies, salads, grain bowls, or even rehydrate them for pies, sauces, or smoother smoothies, often by soaking in hot water for 10-30 minutes to plump them up before use.
For Baking & Breakfast
- Oatmeal/Cereal: Mix into hot oatmeal, granola, or sprinkle over cold cereal.
- Muffins & Breads: Fold into batters for muffins, scones, or quick breads; rehydrate first for softer results.
- Pancakes & Waffles: Add to batter for bursts of flavor.
- Cookies: Excellent in oatmeal cookies or shortbread.
- Pies: Add ½ cup to fresh blueberry pie filling to absorb liquid and intensify flavor.
To rehydrate dried blueberries, cover them with hot water or juice in a bowl and let them soak for 10-30 minutes until plump, then drain well; for quicker results, microwave for 30-60 seconds, or for more flavor, soak in hot juice, rum, or brandy, and use in baking or as a snack to add moisture and flavor.
Simple Soaking Method
- Place dried blueberries in a bowl.
- Pour boiling or very hot water (or juice, liquor) over them, ensuring they are fully submerged.
- Steep for 10 to 30 minutes (or longer for very dry berries).
- Drain thoroughly before adding to recipes.
Storage Recommendations

For the best flavor and freshness, we recommend storing your Gerbs in an airtight container in a cool, dark place such as a pantry or kitchen cabinet, away from sunlight and heat sources like the oven.
Each time the container is opened, oxygen sneaks in and can speed up rancidity, so try to keep only about one pound of product accessible at a time.
While Gerbs can be frozen, we don’t recommend it. Freezing and thawing can change the natural cell structure, which may affect texture and taste. Keep them cool, dry, and sealed tight for the best experience!

It is so difficult to find dried fruits that my son can have as he has a severe nut allergy. I appreciate Gerbs more than they will ever know.

These blueberries were my favorite item I ordered from Gerbs! I bought an assortment of things for making granola bars, and mixing in oatmeal and yogurt :). Delicious, great quality! I just wish they were less expensive so that I could load up the pantry!

My wife is allergic to all nuts (tree and peanut), so to get such a great product without having fear as a factor is wonderful. She loves to cook oatmeal and cookies with these blueberries. But I like to eat them straight outta the bag. Thank you Gerbs.

Product was delivered in a timely manner to the mid-west. The blueberries are the perfect amount of dry. They flavor is concentrated and the texture is chewy but not leathery. We are enjoying them in oatmeal and as snack.
