Introducing Gerbs Five Seed n’ Honey Granola

OVERVIEW OF GERBS GRANOLA

Granola is a crunchy breakfast food and snack made from baked rolled oats, seeds, dried fruits and sweeteners like honey or syrup, sometimes with chocolate added, creating clusters or a loose cereal that’s eaten with oat milk, cows milk, yogurt, or fruit, or as a topping. It’s known for being high in fiber and energy, making it popular for hiking and healthy eating, though store-bought versions can be high in sugar.

Key Ingredients

  • Base: Gluten Free Rolled oats.
  • Sweeteners: Honey, maple syrup, brown sugar.
  • Fats: Oil (like sunflower or grapeseed) for baking.
  • Add-ins: Seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, hemp, chia, and flax), dried fruit (cranberries, blueberries, cherries, banana chips, currants, mango, dates, figs, pineapple, and strawberries), spices (cinnamon), chocolate.

How it’s Made & Eaten

  • Ingredients are mixed, spread on a pan, and baked until crisp, toasted, and golden brown, sometimes stirred to form clusters.
  • Eaten with milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, fresh fruit, or as a topping on ice cream and/or desserts.
  • Its lightweight, calorie-dense nature makes it great for backpacking and hiking.

HOW IS GERBS GRANOLA MADE

Granola is made by combining Gerbs rolled oats, pumpkin, sunflower, and flax seeds, honey and sunflower oil and mixing until coated and incorporated. Next spread onto custom baking sheets, and baked until lightly brown and crisp, then cooling completely before taking a spin in a coating pan to break up and evenly distribute ingredients. The process involves mixing dry ingredients, mixing wet ingredients, combining them, baking, and cooling, with proper pan rotation halfway through for even cooking. Once this base granola is cooled and properly mixed, to make other batches we simple incorporate the ingredients in the coating pan process.

KEY HEALTH BENEFITS OF GERBS GRANOLA

Granola is a nutrient-dense food primarily composed of oats, seeds, and dried fruits, providing a concentrated source of energy and essential micronutrients.

The following are the key health benefits of granola:

  • Promotes Heart Health: Oats in granola contain beta-glucan, a soluble fiber that has been shown to reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels. Additionally, ingredients like flaxseeds and nuts provide omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants that can help lower blood pressure.
  • Improves Digestive and Gut Health: Granola is high in dietary fiber, which aids in regular bowel movements and prevents constipation. Certain ingredients also act as prebiotics, feeding beneficial gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium, which supports a healthy microbiome.
  • Provides Sustained Energy: Unlike sugary cereals that cause rapid spikes and crashes, granola’s combination of complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and protein provides a stable, long-lasting supply of energy.
  • Aids in Weight Management: The high fiber and protein content (from nuts and seeds) promotes satiety, helping you feel fuller for longer and potentially reducing overall calorie intake.
  • Stabilizes Blood Sugar: Soluble fiber slows the rate of sugar absorption into the bloodstream, preventing the sharp spikes in blood glucose levels often associated with refined carbohydrate snacks.
  • Rich in Essential Micronutrients: Depending on the specific blend, granola can be a significant source of vitamins and minerals, including:
    • Iron: Essential for preventing anemia and building red blood cells.
    • Magnesium and Zinc: Support immune function, nerve health, and energy metabolism.
    • Vitamin E: A powerful antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative damage and reduces inflammation.

HOW TO COOK & INCORPORATE GRANOLA INTO YOUR DIET

Granola is a versatile ingredient that can be incorporated into your diet beyond a breakfast bowl by using it as a crunchy, nutrient-dense topping for yogurt, fruit, or salads, or by incorporating it into baked goods like muffins, cookies, and fruit crisps. It also functions well as a savory coating for chicken, fish, or roasted vegetables, and can be used to make homemade bars, energy bites, or a sweet pie crust.

How to Incorporate Granola into Your Diet

  • Breakfast & Snacks:
    • Yogurt/Smoothie Bowls: Top Greek yogurt or thick smoothies with granola and berries for added fiber and texture.
    • Hot Cereals: Sprinkle over oatmeal or cream of wheat.
    • Energy Bites/Bars: Combine granola with seed butter and honey, then chill and slice.
    • Fruit Pairing: Sprinkle over apple slices with seed butter or on top of applesauce.
  • Cooking & Baking:
    • Fruit Crisps: Use pulsed granola mixed with butter and flour as a top layer for baked fruit.
    • Baked Goods: Mix into pancake, waffle, or muffin batter for added crunch.
    • Crusts: Combine crushed granola with butter to make a base for cheesecake or pies.
  • Savory Meals:
    • Salad Topping: Use as a sweet-and-salty alternative to croutons, particularly on spinach or roasted veggie salads.
    • Roasted Veggies: Sprinkle on top of roasted sweet potatoes, carrots, or green beans.
    • Savory Coating: Pulse in a food processor and use as a breading for chicken or fish.

Tips for Using Granola

  • Avoid Burning: When using granola as a topping for baked goods, add it in the last 10–15 minutes of baking, or mix it with a little oil to prevent burning.
  • Texture Control: Pulse granola in a food processor if you need a finer texture for pie crusts or breading.
  • Flavor Profiles: Use sweeter granolas for fruit crisps and yogurt, and nuttier, less sweet blends for savory salads or meat coatings.

Storage Recommendations

For the best flavor and freshness, we recommend storing your Gerbs in an airtight container in a cool, dark place such as a pantry or kitchen cabinet, away from sunlight and heat sources like the oven.

Each time the container is opened, oxygen sneaks in and can speed up rancidity, so try to keep only about one pound of product accessible at a time.
