Pumpkin, sunflower, and hemp seeds come in the shell or out of the shell. "In the Shell" is commonly referred to as "whole." "Out of the Shell" is commonly known as kernels or hearts. Whole hemp and pumpkin may be eaten in their entirety to increase fiber intake but may also be cracked open. It is not recommended to eat whole sunflower seeds in their entirety as the shell is too tough for most to digest.

Allergy Questions

General education for families navigating food allergies.

Educational information only, not medical advice. Always consult a board-certified allergist about your own diagnosis and care.
  • A food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to a certain food. The symptoms typically include hives, swelling of the throat or tongue, nausea, and loss of consciousness.
  • A food intolerance is caused by an enzyme deficiency; it does not involve the immune system. Lactose intolerance is an example. A person with lactose intolerance lacks the enzyme needed to digest milk sugar. When the person eats milk products, symptoms such as gas, bloating, and abdominal pain may occur.

Symptoms include itchy rash or hives, swelling of the lips, tongue, or mouth; nausea; abdominal pain; vomiting; diarrhea; watery or itchy eyes; runny nose; shortness of breath; and/or wheezing. Reactions range from mild to severe and usually appear within minutes to two hours of eating.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that is potentially fatal. It is caused by food allergy, insect stings, medication, and in rare cases, latex. During anaphylaxis, a person may experience a drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness, or respiratory distress. It requires immediate treatment with epinephrine and a call to emergency services.

Strict avoidance of the allergy-causing food is the only reliable way to prevent a reaction. Read ingredient labels for all foods. If a product doesn't have a label, allergic individuals should not eat that food. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer or choose foods made on dedicated, allergen-free equipment, like ours.

The skin prick test is the preferred method of testing for food allergies. A blood (RAST/IgE) test is sometimes used instead. A negative result virtually confirms that the patient is not allergic to that food. However, a positive result only indicates the possibility of a reaction. A supervised oral food challenge is often needed to confirm positive results. Always consult a board-certified allergist.
