How Flax Seeds Are Grown and Harvested
Flax is cultivated by sowing seeds densely in well-drained soil. Plants mature over approximately 90–110 days and are ready to harvest once the stems yellow and the seed pods turn brown and begin to rattle. Depending on the intended use, flax is harvested either by pulling up the whole plant (commonly for fiber) or by direct combining for seed collection. After harvest, the plants are dried, then the seeds are separated from the straw through threshing or rippling—either by hand or with modern machinery—to preserve quality and ensure clean, ready-to-use seeds.
Flax seeds offer a mild, nutty, and earthy taste often compared to pumpkin or sunflower seeds. Golden flax tends to be slightly sweeter and more delicate, while brown flax delivers a deeper, toastier, earth-forward flavor. When freshly ground, flax adds a subtle, wholesome note to both sweet and savory recipes, blending seamlessly into smoothies, yogurt, baked goods, breading, and more. For best flavor, store seeds properly to maintain freshness and prevent any bitter or off taste.
Flavor Profile
- Overall: Mildly nutty, earthy, lightly grassy.
- Golden Flax: Lighter, buttery, subtly sweet, and easy to blend into recipes.
- Brown Flax: Bolder, earthier, with richer toasted notes; may taste bitter if no longer fresh.
- Texture: Whole seeds are firm and crunchy; ground flax is fine and powdery, becoming lightly gelatinous when mixed with liquid.
How to Use Gerbs Raw Brown Flax Seeds
Sweet Applications:
Stir into smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, or overnight oats. Add to muffins, cookies, pancakes, quick breads, and other baked goods for a gentle nutty flavor and added texture.
Savory Applications:
Sprinkle over salads or grain bowls, blend into dressings or sauces, or incorporate into mashed potatoes for a subtle earthy boost. Ground flax also works beautifully as a breading or coating for meats, tofu, or vegetables before baking or pan-searing.
Egg Replacer (Flax “Egg”):
For baking, combine ground flax seeds with water to create a simple plant-based binder. Mix 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons water, then let sit for 5–10 minutes until thickened. Use as a replacement for one egg in recipes like muffins, cookies, and pancakes.

Nutritional Benefits Gerbs Flax Seeds
Flaxseeds are nutritional powerhouses packed with fiber, omega-3s (ALA), and lignans, offering benefits for heart health (lowering cholesterol/blood pressure), digestion (relieving constipation), blood sugar control, and potentially reducing cancer risk and menopause symptoms. Grinding them is key to absorbing these nutrients, which support gut health, skin, and brain function, making them a great addition to smoothies, oatmeal, or baked goods.
Key Health Benefits
Heart Health: Rich in ALA omega-3s and fiber, flaxseeds help lower total and bad (LDL) cholesterol and reduce blood pressure.
Digestive Health: The high fiber content promotes regular bowel movements and can relieve constipation.
Blood Sugar Control: Fiber and ALA contribute to stable blood glucose levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Menopause Symptom Relief: Flaxseed lignans can help reduce hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms.
Skin & Brain Health: Antioxidants and omega-3s support healthier skin and improved brain function.

Storage Recommendations
For the best flavor and freshness, we recommend storing your Gerbs in an airtight container in a cool, dark place such as a pantry or kitchen cabinet, away from sunlight and heat sources like the oven.
Each time the container is opened, oxygen sneaks in and can speed up rancidity, so try to keep only about one pound of product accessible at a time.
While Gerbs can be frozen, we don’t recommend it. Freezing and thawing can change the natural cell structure, which may affect texture and taste. Keep them cool, dry, and sealed tight for the best experience!

These are great for smoothies and to add fiber to my diet. I use my nutribullet to grind them fresh every day and get the most antioxidants benefit I can. I am so relieved to feel safe eating seeds and knowing there are no nut particles in them.
