Rice varieties at Gerbs
Gerbs carries white and brown rice varieties. White rice has the bran and germ removed, which gives it a softer texture, milder flavor, and longer shelf life. Brown rice retains the bran and germ, which gives it a chewier texture and a nuttier flavor. Both are naturally gluten-free and are processed on the same dedicated 14-Free equipment.
How to cook rice
For white rice, combine one part rice with two parts water, bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat to low, and cook for 18 minutes. Let sit covered for five minutes, then fluff. For brown rice, use a 1:2.5 ratio and cook for 40 to 45 minutes. A rice cooker simplifies both: use the same ratios and follow the cooker's instructions. Rinsing rice before cooking removes surface starch and produces a less sticky result.
How to store rice
White rice keeps almost indefinitely in a sealed container in a cool, dry place. Brown rice has more fat in the bran and can go rancid within six to twelve months at room temperature: refrigerate or freeze for best freshness. Cooked rice keeps in the refrigerator for up to four days.
